In "A Scream Across the Sky," a flashback shows a Spartan, unable to control the Void entity's power, being mercifully killed by Mister Majestic. Meanwhile, in the DC Universe, Captain Atom pilots the Composite Superman/Batman robot to obliterate the kryptonite asteroid. Reflecting on his past as a wrongfully accused soldier subjected to an experiment that granted him powers and altered his appearance, Atom feels overshadowed by iconic heroes like Superman. As he nears the asteroid, he contemplates the experiment that empowered him, then refocuses on his mission. Declaring "Goodbye. And God bless America," he smashes into the meteor, seemingly sacrificing himself. Later, Captain Atom reappears in Tokyo, astonishing Batman and Superman, who believed him dead and had held a hero's funeral. Batman inquires how Atom survived the asteroid's destruction; Atom admits ignorance. At the explosion's peak, the force hurled Atom into the Wildstorm Universe. Plummeting through Earth's atmosphere, he crashes into a New York City apartment building. An elderly man, anticipating his arrival, watches from his window. Revived by medic Nikola Hanssen, the old man, accepting his impending death, cryptically tells Nikola it's "the beginning for you." He hands over a box with the Void entity's essence, linked to the original Void in Antarctica, entrusting it to Nikola.
